Computer Caution

The Internet may be a great place to find and communicate with your paramours, but it's an even better place to get caught. Here are some tips to keeping your cyber communications secure.

Keep it at the office

Since your SO probably doesn't have access to your office PC, keeping all your online communications at the office may be the key to keeping them secret. Of course, if your company has strict policies about email use, be careful; someone in the IT department may be reading through your lovey dovey correspondence on a daily basis.

Delete, delete, delete

Immediately after receiving or sending an email to your lover, delete it. Remember, most email programs keep a copy of every email you send. And also remember, check the trash. Most email programs will keep deleted messages in a trash folder until you empty it. More dalliances have been discovered by someone checking your email than everything else.

Keep your passwords secret

Many email programs will remember your password for you, letting anyone check your email. Disable that option. In addition, make your password impossible to guess. Don't use your kids names or your favorite sports team. Remember, your SO knows you better than yourself, so pick a password that no one could ever think of.

Be careful with instant messaging

Some instant messaging programs, like ICQ and MIRC, keep logs of your communications by default. Make sure you turn that option off and you purge your logs periodically if you leave it on. Also, if possible, keep your lover off of your "buddy list"; you don't want to leave any evidence of who she is. Also, be careful when chatting with strangers. Your SO might try to trick you by going online as a decoy, trying to entrap you. You should an alias your SO doesn't know about.

Reader Tips

Regarding e-mail, try to keep all activities restricted to web based e-mail hosts, and that way you don't have to worry about much evidence on the local PC. Hotmail is not as preferrable as any of the many free web e-mail hosts available as Hotmail sends your IP address with your e-mail message (and other Microsoftisms). Also, regarding Instant Messaging, I have used the web-based ICQ with a -different- ICQ number than I normally use to communicate, but then again I'm extra paranoid. - Age 27, Canada

Tip about email: start a new Hotmail account for communication with your lover ONLY. Make sure to set it to "public computer" login (so that it will never "remember" your password). Do not ever use another account; pretend this is the only one that can talk to theirs. Delete it immediately when it's over. - Age 30

I HIGHLY recommend using X-block software. A freeware version can be downloaded (free, of course) from www.xblock.com. It will remove traces of documents opened and pictures viewed, it detects and removes spy software that logs your activity, and also finds and removes adult content on your computer. I have been using the freeware version for a long time. Only disadvantage of the freeware version, you will have to manually delete your browser's history of visited websites, which takes only a second.

Another word of caution -- there are programs which can purchased and downloaded online for about $25 which allow e-mail passwords to be uncovered. AOEPR (Advanced Outlook Express Password Recovery) for example is supposedly intended for those who forget their email logins and passwords, but can also be used by your SO to hack into your e-mail without you knowing! - Anonymous

With your computer in check, now focus on your car.
